[Rosso sets them down, and immediately Basil is crouching, bending at the knees so he can gently greet them. He's never owned a pet himself, but he has more familiarity with them between Mewo and Max's Cake Hound...so he'll offer them his claws to sniff just as Rosso asks if he can watch them.]

[Rosso really doesn't want to say "we're gonna go sacrifice ourselves" to Basil, who's so anxious and small and sweet. He'll say "fuck" in front of the kid all the time, but he draws the line at making his anxiety worse.]

Adri and I are gonna scope out new places. See if we can find somewhere in all this mess that's flourishing. [It's an easy enough lie to tell.] And taking the animals with us, even if they don't need to eat, is gonna be too hard.

On one hand, Rosso could be telling him the truth- it would be believable that he and Adrian would simply try to avoid it all by moving elsewhere- but...at the same time, the timing here is also awfully coincidental.

As Rosso explains, Basil will offer his arms to both Alisha and Dachie, to pick them up if they'd like to be scooped. He's warm all over, like a heated blanket.]

[He doesn't like this. it feels all too much like an ultimatum, and it's what ultimately prompts Basil to hold the two creatures a little bit closer, as if to protect them from what's unfolding. He imagines they can sense something's amiss, if nothing else.]
