[Basil trusts Max, and so, he waits. He wasn't going to go charging after her within the first few minutes, because it's not likely she'd even find anybody that quickly. It's not as busy at night, which means hunting is a little harder. Most locals know better than to roam the streets after dark for fear of nocturnal monsters, not unless they had some reason to be out here, or they worked late or something...
Besides, you're in danger during the day, too. It often matters little for the people here, even when they try to be careful.
