Just like how Max reached a point where she didn't think about Basil's fire, didn't worry about whether or not he'd lose control and burn her...it's the same here, except Basil is maybe being a touch more reckless knowing that Max has not had powers like these before, and could very easily set him ablaze without realizing she'd done it. But as she talks rapidly, words overlapping and getting away from her, he realizes that he has to do something to ground her, even for just a moment.
Taking her hand, holding it...it's the first thing he thinks of. It's what he would have done with Sunny, back then.
