There is a fine line between "warm" and "literally on fire" when it comes to being a Gargoyle, he's found, and since he's impervious to flames...not just his own? He could get way too hot and never realize it. He's accidentally just set his skin ablaze before while trying to test this out (which is why any practicing has been done outdoors, not in). The only reason he's doing it here is because this is a special circumstance...he needs to be able to do this, for Max's sake.
